Ivory-Billed Woodpecker

The Ivory-Billed woodpecker is so rare that is even considered by some to be extinct.  Scientists don't know that much about it because it's so rare.  If you're very, very, very lucky you may see one. This post may not have that many facts in it.

  • it's the largest woodpecker north of Mexico
  • it is endangered because of destruction of its natural habitat
  • their bills were used to make Native-American decorations
  • they eat insects like beetles and larvae
  • the population is unknown
  • there was only one sighting in the last five years
  • it will live from 4 to 11 years
  • the young leave the nest after 25 to 30 days

This is a drawing of one.

This is one of the only known photographs.

  • they almost went extinct because of the demand of their soft silky fur
  • they first started appearing 41 million years ago
  • they are very sensitive to heat
  • they have the softest fur of all land mammals
  • they can see with their whiskers
  • they take dust baths

  • they weigh as much as 4 ounces when adults
  • they can glide over 150 feet!
  • they use their tails like rudders when gliding
  • people keep them as pets
  • in the wild they live in groups of 15-30
  • they have opposable fingers and toes

Here is a sugar glider with its cute adorable eyes.

Here is an example of how small a sugar glider is.

My posts will get longer and more descriptive about the animals I select.
